In Alex Feretos' words:

My journey into kitesurfing started when I made contact with Christophe Martin in France. Christophe is one of the pioneers in the development of disabled kitesurfing, and he has a wealth of information about getting started in the sport. We talked a lot, and I soon realized that learning the sport with proper training and using special equipment would be expensive- the only way for me to access the sport would be through a sponsor.

I wasn’t put off! The first thing I needed to do was to take some lessons. I contacted kiteclub.gr in Greece who recommended I get in touch with the Global Kiter Foundation, who were just setting up. I was one of the first participants in their workshop- in fact, I was the first one on the beach waiting for it to start! It was a really fantastic experience and now, with GKF, I am closer to my objective- to kitesurf!

In our Team Story segment, we are highlighting projects and work that is being carried out by some of the GKF Team. This post is about Roman Kappeler’s project in North-eastern Brazil.

In his own words:

Welcome to Falesia Kite School for Children!

Once you start kiting, we know how easy it is to get totally hooked. The wind, the fresh air and the feeling of freedom are incredible hooks for happy living!

As with any sport, you will soon progress onto different equipment in your search to find the perfect kite to suit your style and that ultimate board that will be your companion. But what to do with your old gear?

We know kiters get quite attached to their equipment and so its sometimes hard to let go. But there are some great ways of reusing old kites that are just gathering dust in the corner.

I have been busy training and preparing for our Evoikos Channel charity crossing. Unfortunately, due to the very bad weather conditions over the past 3 weeks, we didn’t get the authorization to cross as we had hoped on the 4th of Feb.

That said, the weather did clear up on Saturday for the afternoon. We had very strong South winds which turned the -2C from the cold front into a very mild 14C almost overnight! We were happy to use these conditions for training, but we need North winds to cross from Marmari (Evia) to Loutsa. Anyway- it was the first day of clear weather in weeks so the team met in Loutsa early morning for a great training session.
