'Wind that Works' Athens reaches new heights!

We want to share with you the news from our latest event! Last Saturday GKF was joined by a group of 11 very enthusiastic participants and a team of 26 volunteers from Enel Green Power Hellas for our latest kiting workshop. We were also delighted to welcome representatives from the Ministry of Health in Greece who came for a first hand look at the work GKF is doing.
So how did the day unfold?
Everyone gathered at 1pm at Karavi Schinias beach club for the initial introduction to the foundation and to kiting. With experienced trainers, Stefan and Gaspar, the entire group learned about wind awareness, kite flying techniques and the wind window. With the theory lesson out of the way, the fun started!
The 11 participants were divided into two groups – beginners, who were learning the skills to fly 2 line power-kites, and returning participants from previous workshops who developed their skills on larger 4 line kites.
It’s only a matter of time before they will get out on the water or start using buggies on land! Each participant was assigned volunteers, who helped to launch their kites, and supported them throughout the afternoon.
Mother nature played her role perfectly- the day was excellent for kiting, with just the right amount of wind mixed with some beautiful sunshine. The icing on the cake was all the fun that everyone had together.
Leaving your mark
As always, GKF organizes a huge beach cleanup during each event. Enel Green Power Hellas volunteers rolled up their sleeves and gathered at least 20 bags of rubbish! Their hard work made sure that cans, bottles, cigarette butts, broken glass, old fishing lines and even beach umbrellas stopped littering the beautiful area around Marathonas coast. Our motto is simple: always leave the area cleaner than you find it.
By the end of the day, participants and volunteers had tried their hand at kiting, gained new skills in a fun environment, and worked together with the GKF team to make a difference in people’s lives.
In the words of Nelson Mandela:
“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope.”
We are proud to try to continue this message with our work at Global Kiter Foundation.

Το πρόγραμμα 'Wind that Works' της Αθήνας φτάνει σε νέα ύψη!
Θέλουμε να μοιραστούμε μαζί σας τα νέα από την τελευταία μας δραστηριότητα! Το περασμένο Σάββατο μαζί με την ομάδα του GFK, ενώθηκαν 11 ενθουσιώδεις συμμετέχοντες και μια ομάδα 26 εθελοντών από την Enel Green Power Hellas, για το kiting workshop μας. Είχαμε επίσης τη χαρά να υποδεχτούμε εκπροσώπους του Υπουργείου Υγείας που ήρθαν να επιθεωρήσουν από κοντά το έργο του GKF!
Και ορίστε πως εξελίχτηκε η μέρα...
Η προσέλευση ήταν στη 1 το απόγευμα στο Karavi Beach Club στο Σχοινιά όπου έγινε μια εισαγωγή σχετικά με το Ίδρυμα και το kiting. Με τους έμπειρους εκπαιδευτές kite, Στέφανο και Γκασπάρ, όλη η ομάδα είχε την ευκαιρία να ενημερωθεί για τον άνεμο, τις τεχνικές πετάγματος kite και το παράθυρο του ανέμου (wind window). Όταν τελείωσε το θεωρητικό κομμάτι, ξεκίνησε το πιο διασκεδαστικό μέρος της πρακτικής!
Οι 11 συμμετέχοντες μοιράστηκαν σε δύο ομάδες – αρχάριοι, όπου μάθαιναν πώς να πετούν μικρότερους kites (2-line), και πιο προχωρημένοι, από τα προηγούμενα workshops, οι οποίοι ανέπτυξαν τις δεξιότητές τους σε μεγαλύτερους 4-line kites. Είναι μόνο θέμα χρόνου μέχρι να μπουν στο νερό ή να χρησιμοποιήσουν buggies στη στεριά! Σε κάθε συμμετέχοντα είχαν ανατεθεί εθελοντές, οι οποίοι βοηθούσαν στην ανύψωση του kite και ήταν στο πλευρό τους όλο το απόγευμα.
Η μητέρα φύση έπαιξε τον ρόλο της εκπληκτικά – η μέρα ήταν ιδανική για kiting, έχοντας τον σωστό άνεμο μαζί με μια υπέροχη λιακάδα. Το αποκορύφωμα ήταν η διασκέδαση που μοιράστηκαν όλοι μαζί.

Όπως πάντα, το GKF διοργανώνει μεγάλο καθαρισμό παραλίας σε κάθε δραστηριότητά του. Οι εθελοντές της Enel Green Power Hellas σήκωσαν τα μανίκια και μάζεψαν τουλάχιστον 20 σάκκους απορριμάτων! Με σκληρή δουλειά εξασφάλισαν ότι αφαιρέθηκαν τενεκεδάκια, μπουκάλια, αποτσίγαρα, σπασμένα γυαλιά, παλιές πετονιές, μέχρι και σπασμένες ομπρέλες, από την όμορφη παραλία του Μαραθώνα. Το μότο μας είναι απλό: πάντα αφήνουμε την περιοχή πιο καθαρή από όσο την βρήκαμε!
Μέχρι το τέλος της ημέρας, οι συμμετέχοντες και οι εθελοντές είχαν όλοι δοκιμάσει τη γοητεία του kite, απέκτησαν νέες δεξιότητες σε ένα όμορφο φιλικό περιβάλλον και εργάστηκαν μαζί με την ομάδα του GKF για να κάνουν τη διαφορά στη ζωή των ανθρώπων.
Όπως είπε και ο Nelson Mandela: «Ο αθλητισμός έχει τη δύναμη να αλλάξει τον κόσμο. Έχει τη δύναμη να ενώνει με ένα μοναδικό τρόπο. Μιλάει στους νέους στη δική τους γλώσσα. Ο αθλητισμός μπορεί να δημιουργήσει ελπίδα».
Είμαστε περήφανοι για την προσπάθειά μας να συνεχίζουμε το μήνυμα αυτό μέσα από το έργο του Global Kiter Foundation.

This was my second time that I participated in the Global Kiter Foundation event. Again I was amazed by the good spirits and positive altitude of all these people that came to assist us and learn us how to kite. I believe that as persons with disabilities, it is rare to be approached be others with such an enthusiasm, and being outdoors and playing with kites might be a reason for that.
Having said that, this time we got more personal with the kites. The wind was much stronger and you could hear the air whistling when you pulled sharp turns with the training kites, and of course when the big kite got out, you had to pay respect or you could easily take off together with the people that were holding you.
I can’t wait to start moving with the kites, either on land or in the sea.
Thanks to all the people that organized and participated in this event, and keep up the good work. We really appreciate what you are doing.
